PREVIEW: COMEDY

Every comedy differs by how the character is reduced or dropped in the story. There are three major ways this happens:

1. animal: showing or talking about people doing the basic bodily functions. Any dirty joke is animal humor.

2. child: someone acting as a child. Or more generally, someone reacting with more emotion than the situation would normally require.

3. machine: someone acting like a thing or a machine. Or more generally, reacting with less emotion than the situation requires.

Why is this important if you are going to write a good comedy? Because the way you construct the overall story, the scene, and the gag depends on which of these three drops your characters are going to undergo.
