PREVIEW:
FANTASY
Fantasy is the
most geometric of all story forms.
What does that mean
for a storyteller? Fantasies deal in extreme opposites of place and
person, from the mundane to the fantastical and back to the mundane
again.
The first step in
writing a good fantasy is to focus on the premise setup. Premise is
the single most important element in any movie, but in fantasy it goes
beyond high concept. Everything depends on how you set up the big opposites
in the story.
The logic has to
be impeccable, and it has to say what you want to say about living the
good life. You can start negative, go positive and end negative, or
you can start positive, go negative, and end positive.
But start with that
basic sequence, and add all other elements of character, plot, structure,
theme and dialogue within that strict frame.
