Y: The Last Man was a comic book series that spanned about five and a half years and, like so many of its brothers, already has a film adaptation in the works. But this isn't your ordinary comic book action story.

Y begins when a plague of sorts suddenly kills everything with a Y chromosome -- except amateur escape-artist Yorick Brown and his pet Capuchin monkey Ampersand. The story world writer Brian K. Vaughn detailed in the 60 issues he penned following Yorick's travels was sometimes funny, often heartbreaking, and always clever.

Put in the care of stubborn Agent 355, Y travels first cross-country, then around the world with 355 and Dr. Mann, a geneticist who believes she can find the cure because she may have been the cause. Y's real desire is to reunite with his girlfriend, Beth -- as luck would have it, the last man alive is a serial monogamist.

The sprawling series gained a huge audience and explored every possibility -- what about the astronauts who were in space when the plague hit? What does the monkey have to do with this? And is Yorick really the last man alive?
